A challenge takes a couple of minutes to set up. Everything you decide here is what gets checked at the end, so it pays to be precise.

Write the claim

Say exactly what you are claiming, in one sentence a stranger could judge. "The train will be late again" is a start; "the 7:42 will arrive more than five minutes late on Monday" is something proof can settle.

The claim is what the other side counters and what a referee reads if you end up disagreeing. Vague claims are the single biggest reason a challenge turns into an argument.

Pick your opponent

You can challenge someone from your contacts, by email, or with a link you send yourself — whatever gets it in front of them. An invitation sent to a phone number can only be redeemed through the link that comes with it, so pass that link along unchanged.

Public challenges are also possible: those are open for others to follow. See Public challenges.

Agree the debt of honour and the deadline

Two things settle the shape of a challenge: what the loser owes, and when it has to be decided. Keep the debt something you would actually hand over — a pizza, a round, the washing-up, an admission in front of everyone.

The deadline matters more than people expect. If it passes without a winner, both sides lose points. See Deadlines.

Choose the mode

Claim against counter-claim, counting over a period, or a call about the future — see The three challenge modes.

Send it

Once the other side accepts, the challenge is live and both of you can add proof until the deadline.
